This is a classic example of the “Beijing” or Tianjin” sideboard, so-called because of their origin to this region of northern China. This has three drawers and doors below. The middle stile can be removed to place larger items inside.

The upturned ends is a feature of this type of furniture as is the carved side aprons. On this cabinet there is relief carving of peonies. Pronounced “fugui hua” fugui means wealth and honour that was achieved by being successful in the imperial examinations and then being selected for a lucrative and socially prominent administrative position.
