Low back armchairs

Origin: Shandong province

    19th century
    • elm wood
    • 620mm wide x 460mm deep x 920mm high

These chairs are well suited as presentation pieces and occasional use in the home. The low back means they sit comfortably under a painting or mirror to form a unique setting. The chairs can sit together or either side of a hall table.

The chairs have strong, clearly defined lines. The contrast of open and relief carving is visually appealing. The sides display open carving of a geometric long life motif. The back of the chair has open carving of vine motif with leaves in a ‘cloud head’ design symbolising a wish for good fortune. The central lotus medallion is a Buddhist symbol of purity and longevity. The relief carving around the arch of the back is a wave motif representing prosperity.
