Rectangular plant stands with humpback stretchers

Origin: Shanxi province

19th century

  • walnut
  • 445mm wide x 295mm deep x 850mm high

This pair of walnut plant stands has flush design with Ming style unadorned simplicity. The legs are narrow and gradually taper downwards ending in a small inward hoof. The humpback stretchers enhance the visual appeal yet provide a strong support to the legs. This design is only possible with particularly strong timbers, such as walnut.

Walnut is favored by Chinese cabinetmakers for its texture and strength. The top is made out of a single plank of timber.

Such is the visual appeal of these stands is that they would be a feature piece in any room. Even placed in a corner they will still stand out.
