Titled “Spirit of the Deep Sea”. A melding of sub-ocean outcrop and coral reef blends with rising seaweed. The power of the ocean is emphasised by the massive underglaze red.
About the Artist
Wang Fangcheng is passionate about the infinite creative possibilities of the clay and the irregularity of the glaze after firing. His pieces are so tactile you just want to keep turning them over in your hands.
Wang Fangcheng was born in 1974 in Bo Yang county, about 90 kilometres west of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. He loved painting from a very young age. Later he became a painter and calligrapher.
After years of practicing art Mr Wang found his true passion in creating porcelain objects. He is obsessed with the infinite possibilities of the clay and the irregularity of the glaze after firing. He views porcelain as the embodiment of the Chinese Five Elements of the universe, i. e metal, wood, water, fire and earth. These elements are essential to form porcelain and the colours of the glaze.
For many years Mr Wang immersed himself in his studio in Jingdezhen, called “Natural Porcelain Studio”. Underglaze colours such as red, blue, yellow and green that are challenging to many artists have become Mr Wang’s most frequently used colours.
