Official hat armchairs with ruyi carving

Origin: Shandong province

    19th century
    • elm wood
    • 530mm wide x 440mm deep x 1010mm high

These low back armchairs are ideal as a decorative function under a painting or framing a table in the house. They can also be used as alternative seating for special occasions.

The chairs have open carved spandrels of a motif called a ruyi under the seat. The ruyi is a sceptre originally used by the emperor. The term literally means “as you wish” so the ruyi motif is a symbol wishing that all your dreams come true including a long, happy and prosperous life.
