Early 20th century
This pair of deep red lacquered stands is unusual in that the space between the shelf and the drawer at the back is covered rather than open. This could be a useful backdrop for a colourful vase or bowl to be put on the shelf. Furniture was lacquered to preserve the timber and also to give a lustrous finish to the item. On the stands the lacquer is still in very good condition. The apron has relief floral carving.
