- Craftsmanship and Philosophy
Chinese carpenters approached cabinet-making with a unique perspective:
- Cabinets were viewed as miniature houses, built to last generations;
- Emphasis on balanced proportions and durability; and
- Designs evolved over centuries, reflecting cultural changes and artistic innovations.
Aesthetic Variety
Some cabinets showcase unadorned elegance, highlighting clean lines and natural wood grain; Others feature rich colours and intricate motifs, often symbolizing good wishes or depicting folklore. This rich heritage of Chinese antique cabinets offers a range of options for modern interiors, combining historical craftsmanship with timeless appeal.
This two section cabinet is a beautiful piece of visual storytelling where the furniture essentially doubles as an open storybook for the household. The panels almost certainly represent scenes from classical Chinese opera (戏曲 – Xiqu) or popular historical epics. The four small rectangular panels at the very top represent Wuxi (martial scenes), likely depicting famous battles or duels from beloved military epics such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三国演义) or The Water Margin (水浒传).
The two large central panels shift the focus from open combat to the dramatic, dialogue-driven plot points of a story, framed beautifully by openwork lattice corners that mimic looking through a formal viewing window or stage setting: perhaps scenes from an historical novel. The paintings on the bottom doors offer a deliberate thematic contrast to the high drama above. Though the lacquer and ink have faded over time, you can make out elegantly robed figures strolling through a peaceful, stylized landscape of mountains, low garden walls, and terraces. These may be an aspiration for a life of quiet luxury.
Conservation and Restoration
Each piece of furniture has been collected with an eye to authenticity. It then undergoes a thorough process of conservation and restoration meaning retaining as much as possible of the original components while restoring its original function so that it will serve for generations to come.
