If you have a spare hour or two to stroll the desolate plains you might come across the most significant building in the Basaltic, the ‘Moon Gate’. The building is a solo ruined entrance arch reaching some 10 metres tall and made out of stone and lime render. Its sudden and meaningless appearance in the bleak landscape can be alarming, but mostly comforting. Its origins, and the building that it was once assumed to provide an entrance for are unknown. A fact that is also alarming but potentially, comforting.
The best times to visit either “Sopa de Cebolla ” or the “Moon Gate ” are during the crescent moon phases, when the sunlight is not as harsh. It also helps to see the magnificent “sunsets” over the distant Regiomontanus crater.
The Sopa de Cebolla has numerous onion soups available on any given day as well as a huge selection of allium based alcoholic refreshments to suit any visitor. The produce is all sourced locally by the Onion farmers, who live in onion shaped houses dotted around the southern plains.
‘Sopa de Cebolla’ is a bar located towards the south-eastern edge of the Mare Nubium, on the earth-facing side of the Moon. It is renowned as one of the best places in the Basaltic plains to grab a cocktail, kick back and enjoy the vast, somewhat empty lunar scenery.
