Artist Statement
My works are complex multi-block prints on hand made 100% Kozo paper using numerous individual hand carved blocks of white Russian Birch. The blocks when inked are printed and layered with exacting registration. The work reflects light and shade in nature and the experience of the silence of a space, with a minimalism and limited colour scheme evoking a sereneness and contemplation in the landscape. I enjoy the practice of a very traditional 16th Century woodblock printing technique which is still practiced in Japan today and referred to as Mokuhanga and bring it into the 21st century.
My contemporary application of this ancient printing practice remains non-toxic and relies on all blocks to be hand printed with a baren. Gilding is often applied in the final stage of printing incorporating both white gold and yellow gold of high karat.
