These measures were designed to hold a set amount of grain or oil.  The unit, however, varied from one region to another. While their function is to hold a certain measure of grain the measures carry important symbolic meaning.

The measure symbolises a full measure of justice mercy and virtue, which should be the right of all, irrespective of station. It is also said that rice is the staff of life and the rice measure is the measure of life.
