Low cabinet with bamboo carving
Early 20th century
- elm wood
- 1025mm wide x 430mm deep x 530mm high
Low cabinets like this were traditionally placed on large platform beds called a kang. They are equally useful in our modern homes as display and storage cabinets.
This cabinet has relief carving of bamboo on the sides. Bamboos flexibility in strong wind is a metaphor for the scholar who has to endure hardship before being successful. As an evergreen bamboo is also a symbol of long life. The geometric carving along the base is a motif of another long life symbol.
